Wake Transit PlanDowntown Cary Multimodal FacilityThe Cary Depot has served local and regional transit since 2005, as well as Amtrak since 1996. The facility serves as the main hub for GoCary and as a secondary hub for GoTriangle services. During peak hours, the facility is near capacity. This leads to increasing safety concerns along the Depot access road. The Wake County Transit Plan outlines an expansion of local and regional bus service and the addition of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Commuter Rail (CT) over the next ten years. A new downtown multimodal center is needed, as the existing facility is unable to support the increased service. The FY18 Adopted Wake Transit Work Plan includes $300,000 for a Downtown Operations Feasibility Study (we are requesting an additional $200k in FY19). This study will evaluate proposed BRT corridors into downtown Cary, as well as potential site locations for the multimodal center. The site will need to accommodate a multimodal center that serves local and regional bus service, BRT, CT, Amtrak and NCRR, in addition to providing parking options for commuters. The study is expected to kick-off in January 2018 and will take approximately 10-12 months to complete. The Town of Cary is requesting FFY2019 LAPP funding for Architectural & Engineering Design (preliminary engineering) services, as well as right-of-way and land acquisition needs.
